Australians are being urged to look closer to home when booking their next holiday, to support the nation’s tourism industry in the wake of the 2019-2020 bushfires.
The Australian Chamber- Tourism, the national peak body of Australian tourism organisations welcomes the launch of Tourism Australia’s Holiday Here This Year campaign today, as part of plans to stimulate tourism – one of Australia’s most lucrative industries.
“Regional communities across Australia who rely on the tourism industry are continuing to feel the sting of Australia’s devastating bushfires as tourists continue to cancel or delay travel plans,” Australian Chamber – Tourism Chair John Hart said.
“We must kick-start our vital tourism industry by dispelling misinformation and
raising awareness of all the beautiful places right here on our doorstep, including those affected by the fires.
“Encouraging tourists to head back into our regional communities is of urgent priority and we applaud Tourism Australia’s latest drive to promote domestic holidays.“
The campaign marks Tourism Australia’s return to the domestic tourism market for the first time since 2013.
“Australian Chamber-Tourism has been advocating for a domestic marketing effort to get visitors back into bush fire affected regions where they are so desperately needed. This initiative is only possible because of the tourism recovery package announced by the Government on Sunday.
“Tourism is critically important to our economy. 1 in 13 Australian jobs depends on tourism, so it’s vital to the future of small businesses in the regions that visitor demand is regenerated as soon as possible.”
The campaign launch is the first of a series of measures the government will be rolling out to support the regeneration of Australia’s tourism sector.
“Australia is very much open for business and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the Morrison Government and Tourism Australia to rebuild and repair Australian tourism”, Mr Hart said.
