Apprenticeship extension addresses skills shortage

The Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements 50 per cent wage subsidy extension to September 2021 announced today is a recognition of its outstanding success in reversing the downward slide in apprentice and trainee numbers.
“This program has been key to rebuilding our country’s skills base in the COVID recovery period,” acting CEO Jenny Lambert said.
“The current program was taken up in full well in advance of the timetable, so we welcome the Federal Government’s decision to uncap the program.
“The extension provides certainty for employers in taking on apprentices and trainees with the subsidy available for a full 12 months for all apprentices and trainees signed up in October last year.
“ACCI recommended the extension of this highly successful program in both our Pre-Budget submission and in direct discussions with Government, recognising it as an ideal way to address youth unemployment which has been exacerbated by the pandemic.
“Today’s announcement gives businesses greater confidence to take on new hires, addressing what has been a long-term decline in apprenticeship numbers.
“Apprenticeships require considerable investment from employers, and these subsidies will help underpin that cost.”
