The positive growth trend of international visitors to Australia reflected in the latest International Visitor Survey, reinforces the status of tourism as a powerhouse in the Australian economy, Australia’s peak body for tourism organisations, the Australian Chamber-Tourism, said today.
“8.1 million international visitors arriving during the year ending December 2017 and spending at a record $41.3 billion is a terrific result but more importantly reflects the continuing growth of the sector”, Executive Chair of Australian Chamber-Tourism, John Hart said.
“We know Tourism creates jobs and drives the economy, but more needs to be done to leverage the potential in this industry.
“In January this year, we wrote to all Federal Members of the House of Representatives highlighting tourism and hospitality employment numbers in their electorate.
“Employment in tourism and hospitality is not just about casual part-time work but spans across a range of highly specialised skills with long-term career opportunities.
“Along with international marketing campaigns to attract visitors, we urge the government to invest in developing new products and infrastructure especially in regional Australia to sustain growth in the industry.”
