Opportunities for business and jobs open up with Australia-Indonesia Deal

Australia’s largest network of businesses, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will join Australian Trade Minister Simon Birmingham and Indonesian Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita at the signing ceremony for the Indonesia – Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) next Monday 4 March in Jakarta.
Australian Chamber CEO James Pearson will join the Chamber’s Indonesian and Australian partners at the event, to celebrate their joint efforts with the Australian and Indonesian Governments over the past eight years in negotiating this successful outcome for businesses and jobs in both countries.
“The Australian Chamber has strongly supported the negotiation process initiated by then-Labor Trade Minister Craig Emerson in 2012. We originally worked with our Indonesian counterparts Kamar Dagang Dan Industri Indonesia (KADIN), the Indonesia – Australia Business Council (IABC), and subsequently the Indonesian employers’ group, Asosiasi Pengusaha Indonesia (APINDO). We acknowledge the contribution of the Australia Indonesia Business Council (AIBC) and the Australian Industry Group in the Indonesia-Australia Business Partnership Group,” Mr Pearson, said today.
“As part of the Agreement, Australia and Indonesia have agreed to a proposal from the Australian Chamber, endorsed by the Business Partnership Group, for a reciprocal Skills Exchange, allowing professionals from both countries to gain 6 months experience in the other’s market. This will open up new pathways for the movement of people to benefit both nations.
“Australia will also provide opportunities for young Indonesians to gain experience and to assist regional Australia to meet seasonal labour requirements by providing an additional 3,000 work and holiday visas.
“Indonesia is one of our nearest neighbours and the largest nation within ASEAN. It should be one of our most important regional trade and strategic partners.
“The Australian Chamber welcomes the efforts of both Governments, and their predecessors, to secure increased trade and investment to the benefit of both Australia and Indonesia.
“We look forward to reviewing the Agreement in detail and working with our members so that they can take full advantage of the opportunities that will be created.”
