The Turnbull government has warned “excessive” increases in the minimum wage will cost jobs, urging the Fair Work Commission to take a cautious approach when determining an annual rise for the nation’s lowest paid.
“The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry said a 1.2 per cent increase — $8.10 a week — would be fair to workers, the unemployed, and small businesses. ACCI chief executive James Pearson said Australia had one of the world’s highest minimum wages. “We need to make it easier for businesses to give unemployed people a job,” he said.”
