Supporting Cormann’s candidacy is a sound investment for Australia

25 Nov 2020 |

ACCI urges support for Mathias Cormann’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

“We’ve never had an Australian at the helm of the OECD,” ACCI CEO James Pearson said.  “Now we have the opportunity to help propel an Australian of the highest calibre to the role, one who brings the required skills, experience and perspective.

“Our longest serving Finance Minister is an astute and practical negotiator who regularly bridged the divide between political parties to achieve outcomes in the Australian Senate. He is the right candidate at the right time for an organisation that needs to forge consensus amongst the world’s developed countries on economic recovery from the pandemic.

“Countries must put up serious candidates and support their campaigns properly.

“Election of Mathias Cormann to the role of Secretary-General is in Australia’s interests as a middle power and trading nation which depends on maintaining and strengthening effective multilateral institutions and the world’s rules-based order.

“If we are serious about not only participating in, but spearheading global restart and recovery, we should throw our weight behind Cormann’s candidacy without hesitation.”

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is an international organisation shaping global policies that foster prosperity, equality, opportunity and well-being for all.

ACCI is the only Australian business organisation which is a member of the influential Business at the OECD (BIAC) network, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the International Organisation of Employers (IOE).
