The latest vocational education and training (VET) data from 2022 is showing the beginning of a decline in student numbers. The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) has recently released two separate reports showing student numbers declining in VET in schools and the number of government-funded VET students have also decreased.

In 2022, there were 242,945 VET in Schools students, a 3.3 per cent decline from 2021. Of those students, 8.5 per cent (or 20,765) participated in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, and 91.5 per cent (or 222,180) in other VET in Schools programs. At the same time there were 1,196,535 students enrolled in government-funded VET in 2022, down by 4.3 per cent (or 53,550) when compared with 2021.

Next week the NCVER will release the latest apprenticeship data for the final quarter of 2022. It is expected we will continue to see declines in this data too.
