Submission | General Review of AANZFTA 2017
The Australian Chamber views AANZFTA as Australia’s leading Free Trade Agreement and should be held up as the model agreement from which others should be based. It is well accepted and has provided benefits to our members and Australia in general. We appreciate that the General Review is being conducted under a directive of the member Governments, however, we suggest that this review is premature given that the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is under negotiation, along with the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership (IA-CEPA) and potentially a revised version of the TransPacific Partnership Agreement (TPP2). The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Australian Chamber) welcomes the opportunity to provide this submission to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) inquiry into retail electricity supply and pricing. Energy needs to be affordable, reliable and secure for both business and households. With that in mind, the Chamber seeks policies that will deliver a near-term reduction in electricity prices, followed by ongoing reductions in the real cost of energy over the longer-term. Superannuation: Alternative Default Models – Submission to the Productivity Commission
The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Chamber) thanks the Productivity Commission for the opportunity to comment on its draft report, Superannuation: Alternative Default Models – Draft Report. The submissions do not deal in detail with draft findings 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or 8.1. With modifications in the case of draft finding 3.4 and draft recommendation 3.2 the Chamber supports the Report’s proposed draft findings and recommendations being made. The Chamber does not any specific recommendations, but the Chamber does not support persevering with the assisted employer choice model or a variant of it.

Submission | Response to the Department of the Environment and Energy Discussion Paper on Review of Climate Change Policies
Stable and predictable policy is required to meet Australia’s internationally agreed target to 2030, and the objective of keeping warming well below two degrees by 2050. However, the introduction of climate policies fundamentally and permanently alters the Australian economy and involves significant costs. The principles guiding policy should therefore not be based solely on emissions reductions, but on ensuring continued economic prosperity for Australians, remaining a competitive jurisdiction to attract global capital, and being able to compete in the provisions of goods and services.

It is important that officers of organisations act ethically, are motivated by appropriate considerations in discharging their responsibilities and make decisions in the interests of the organisation and not in their own interests. The policy and regulatory framework must support this outcome and where there is evidence of systematic failure it is appropriate that the framework be reviewed and strengthened.

Submission | Payment Times and Practices Inquiry – A Submission to the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman
The Australian Chamber welcomes the opportunity to provide a submission and acknowledges the submission by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland. Australian businesses are trending towards shorter payment times, but there has been a recent deterioration for on-time payment. By international comparisons, Australia is lagging and could improve.
